September 17th is Constitution Day, which commemorates the signing of the United States Constitution. On this important day, we encourage everyone to work to better understand our Constitution and become a more knowledgeable citizen.
On September 17, 1787, delegates from twelve of the thirteen states signed the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nine months later, New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, allowing it to officially take effect.
The Constitution reformed our federal government, establishing the legislative, executive, and judicial branches that we have today. The framers took care to outline the powers of each branch and create a system of checks and balances. 235 years later, these mechanisms are still in place and serve as the foundation for our democracy.
