Happy Birthday, America! Today, we celebrate the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution that severed the ties between the American Colonies and Great Britain. However, the colonists still needed to draft a document that they could release to the public. The approved Declaration of Independence was printed two days later and the United States of America was founded.
Because independence was technically declared on July 2nd, some argue that is the proper day to celebrate our nation’s founding. Nonetheless, the July 4th has long been celebrated as Independence Day and was designated as a federal holiday in 1941. Today, the Fourth of July is among the most beloved American holidays and is celebrated with fireworks, barbeques, and summer festivities.
As we celebrate American independence, we encourage you to learn more about our nation’s founding so that you may better understand how our nation began and the ways it continues to shape us to this day.
