On the third monday of February, we celebrate Washington’s Birthday to honor the birthdays of George Washington (February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12).
In 1885, Washington’s Birthday was established as the fifth federal holiday and the first to celebrate the life of an individual American. In the 1960s, the day was changed so that it also recognized Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday lies just days before Washington’s.
While Washington’s Birthday officially celebrates two of our most famous Presidents, many refer to the holiday simply as Presidents’ Day. Nowadays, Presidents’ Day is widely viewed as a day to honor the lives and legacies of all of our nation’s chief executives.
No matter what this holiday means to you, we hope it provides an opportunity for you to reflect on our nation’s history and the leaders that have shaped the United States over time.
Happy Learning!
